Massimo Rossi – Director of Astarte S.A.
Rossi has been a professional numismatist since 1978. He is the past owner of Rossi Numismatica in Mantua (Italy), he has collaborated and conducted public auctions with Kunst und Münzen of Lugano and, until 1997, he was co-director of Numismatica Aretusa S.A., also in Lugano.
In 1989, Rossi curated the exhibition and its respective catalogue, Le Zecche dei Gonzaga, Mantova e Sabbioneta: Monete dell’ ex Collezione Reale e delle Civiche Raccolte Numismatiche di Milano, in Sabbioneta, Italy.
In 1993 he published Un Nuovo Testone di Vespasiano Gonzaga per la zecca di Sabbioneta, regarding a previously unknown coin kept at the British Museum in London.
In 1995 he was a member of the executive committee for the exhibition “I Gonzaga Moneta Arte Storia,” held in Palazzo Te, Mantua, writing several essays for the accompanying catalogue. He also contributed to the drafting of the work by T. Slepova “La Collezione di Monete Mantovane dell’Eremitage” in St Petersburg and, at the Study Convention “La monetazione dei Gonzaga”, he gave a paper entitled “Monete dei Gonzaga appartenenti ai Staatliche Museen di Berlino.”
As part of the series of volumes “Monete e medaglie di Mantova e dei Gonzaga dal XII al XIX secolo,” Rossi was responsible for the publication of “Le Monete dei Gonzaga. Addenda” (vol. VII) and “Le Medaglie dei Gonzaga” (vol. VIII), a work which has become a “Corpus” of Gonzaga medals.
In 2002 he established the Numismatic Museum of the Fondazione Banca Agricola Mantovana, becoming the curator until 2008.
Rossi was member of the Accademia Italiana di Studi Numismatici.
In 2006 he was a member of the executive committee of the exhibition “A Casa di Andrea Mantegna. Cultura Artistica a Mantova nel Quattrocento.” In the same year, on the occasion of the five hundred year anniversary since Andrea Mantegna’s death, he collaborated on the exhibition held at Palazzo Ducale in Mantua by writing an essay entitled “La monetazione a Mantova all’epoca di Andrea Mantegna.”
In October 2006 he organized a Study Day entitled “L’arte della Moneta e della Medaglia a Mantova all’epoca di Andrea Mantegna,” with the collaboration of the Superintendence for the Architectural and Landscape Heritage of Brescia, Cremona and Mantua.
In 2007 and 2008, Rossi organized the sale of medals from a prestigious museum via public auction.
Rossi is the author of various articles published in specialist and non-specialist publications, he is a member of the Swiss Association of Numismatic Professionals, as well as other national numismatic associations.
In 2017 he curated the coins and its respective catalogue of the exhibition of Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, Costruire, pensare, abitare. Sabbioneta e Charleville città ideali dei Gonzaga.
